I am an 'amateur' artist; I've been drawing since I was a young child, took basic courses in high school but have had no formal training since. I did attend a local Art Studio in Catonsville, MD, where the owner/instructor provided insights and critiques, and where I was taught more about colors and tones. My Painting really began after college, while working as an Engineer in Florida. I decided to attempt painting and chose Acrylics to start with. I then moved to Oils and have been using Oils exclusively since.
My inspiration has come from the artwork that my Grandfather, Wesley F. Herrick, Sr., created. It was a combination of outdoor scenes with animals and figures - and often humorous in nature. He was an outdoorsman who hunted, fished and canoed up the Allagash River in Maine, and he was an artist, playing a number of different musical instruments as well as creating both Paintings and wood-carvings. It is my desire to someday produce artwork that would come close to his work.
Other notable artists that I have credited for providing me with inspiration: Norman Rockwell, Andrew Wyeth, Phillip R Goodwin, Frederick Remington, Boris Vallejo, Frank Frazetta, Ken Kelly, and many others. I'm always fascinated by the work done by the "Masters" of the ancient world: Salvador Dali, Edward Hopper, Manet, J. S. Sargent, Renoir, Rembrandt, da Vinci, Vermeer, Titian etc. I enjoy looking at all art - Flemish, Spanish, Italian, English, American, just to name a few.
I have only recently (2009) entered some of my own art into shows. Hopefully, more will follow.
